Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, or PEMF therapy, is an emerging noninvasive form of 'energy' medicine used to treat a variety of illnesses and speed recovery from tissue trauma and surgical trauma. Current FDA indications include units specifically designed to treat major depression and to improved post surgical fracture healing, and in the treatment of migraine headache. PEMF devices are also used to treat chronic pain syndromes of many types. PEMF is not magic, but relies on using a pulsed magnetic field to induce electrical currents deep in the tissues. These electrical currents improve cellular metabolism and enhance a number of physiologic responses including a reduction in pathologic inflammation, enhanced healing due to stem cell activation and directed growth factor stimulation via selective DNA transcription, and mitochondrial electron transport function. PEMF is indeed a modality that works at optimizing fundamental cellular electro-physiology and therefore has numerous applications. It can be used adjunctively with other treatment methods to enhance results.
